In 1999, after an impressive career as co-owner and Chief Financial Officer, Jane Phipps, along with her husband, Bob, sold their fresh fruit and vegetable processing company — Fresh from Texas. After nearly 20-years of being responsible for the financial management, marketing and human resources functions of the company, Jane was ready to start life’s next chapter.
After four years of retirement, Jane, with the endorsement of then United Way CEO Howard Nolan, spearheaded the creation of the Masters Leadership Program (MLP) under the 501(c)(3) and fiscal umbrella of United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. The first academic session took place during 2004-2005 with 37 participants. The late General Bob Herres, CEO of USAA, was the founding board chair and Jane served as MLP’s executive director until her retirement in April, 2013.
Since 2004, MLP has provided an in-depth understanding of the political, economic, cultural, civic, educational, technological, medical, and governmental fabric of San Antonio. The program continues to grow and is now a renown resource for knowledgeable, qualified, and dedicated nonprofit and civic board members in Greater San Antonio. MLP extensively prepares class members to actively participate in local nonprofit and civic boards upon graduation, as well as to join the MLP Alumni Association. Our efforts to build strong competent boards is also generously supported by Community Sponsors who recognize nonprofit resources are best managed by strong leadership.
Today, MLP is governed by a 30-member strong, local board of directors. We remain under the 501(c)(3) fiscal umbrella of the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. Collaborative input from our partners, allows MLP to continually evolve and create better ways of serving.
